James Hamilton, 1st of Dalzell [1]

James Hamilton, 1st of Dalzell is the son of John Hamilton, 4th of Orbieston and Christian Dalzell.[2]

He married, firstly, Beatrice Fleming.[1]

He married, thirdly, Isobel Hamilton, daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Brownhill.[1]

He married, secondly, Jean Henderson, daughter of Sir John Henderson, 4th of Fordell and Anna Halkat, circa 1643.[3]

Career:

  • He prospered by trade, in particular army contracts during Cromwellian wars.[1]
  • He held the office of Burgess of Glasgow in 1632.[1]
  • In 1647 granted territorial Barony of Dalzell, resigned by the Earl and Countess of Carnwath.[1]
  • He was Commissioner of Supply for Lanarkshire in 1655.[1]
