At the age of 14 James Henry was sent out by his step-father, William Smith, to earn a living. He was taken into employment by William Wright, who later became his father in law. He was actively involved in mercantile pursuits in Cradock and Aliwal North. He was a member of the Legislative Council in 1858. This young man rode alone from Bathurst to Grahamstown when he was only 14, in the midst of murdering bouts by blacks, in 1834.
