About James Hyrum Empey

Biographical Summary:

James Hyrum Empey (1857-1943) When he was nine years of age the family moved to St.George. He grew to manhood in Utah's Dixie. He spent one and a half years working on the St.George Temple and was a missionary to the Navajo and Moquitch Indians for 18 months. He hauled freight between St.George and SLC for five years. It took a month to make the trip. After marrying Harriet they moved to Panaca, Nevada, where they lived a number of years. They were parents of nine children. While there, he served as leader of the choir and superintendent of the Sunday School, serving many years. When his wife passed away he moved to Junction. He later married his wife's sister. They separated and she later died. He then married Mrs. Eva Johann Leibert Gilger. After 8 years they divorced. He was a machinist and blacksmith, having spent 35 years working at that trade. For several years after coming to Junction he was in the mercantile business and served as a member of the Junction Town Board and for a number of years was president of the City Creek Irrigation Company. At the time of his death he was the oldest resident and lived in Junction for 33 years.
