About James Donaldson Liggett

James Donaldson Liggett (John, William (Sr.) was born 09 Dec 1821 in Warren County, Ohio, and died 13 Nov 1897 in Detroit, Michigan. He married Jeannette Chestnut McMillan 19 Apr 1848 in Xenia Greene Co., Ohio, daughter of Daniel McMillan and Jeanette Chestnut. She was born 1829 in Chester County, South Carolina, and died 27 Dec 1906.

Children living with them in 1880 in Detroit at their school for girls:

  • Ella M. Liggett 31
  • Frances C. Liggett 28
  • Jeannette M. Liggett 23
  • Elmer E. Liggett 18
  • James E. Liggett 16

Reverend James D. Liggett and Jeannette (Chestnut McMillan) Liggett,………..In the spring of 1878, seven members of the Liggett family, headed by the Reverend James D. Liggett, also a lawyer, editor and abolitionist publisher, settled in Detroit to establish a small, independent school for girls christened originally as The Detroit Home and Day School.

Interesting because Xenia was a hotbed of abolitionist sentiment and Jeannette McMillan's brother was married to a woman whose Xenia family was heavily involved also in abolitionist activities.

During the Civil War, he was the minister of the First Congregational Church in Leavenworth, Kansas, where he preached against slavery.
