About James Melville

From "A Rich Inheritance, Vol 2, the Family Trees" Page 63 James was the second child of James and Mary Melville (nee Gavin). His father, born in Ireland, was a builder and his mother was born in Scotland. His parents were married in the Presbyterian Church in Belfast in 1838 and that same year sailed for New South Wales as free settlers aboard the "Mandarin". James' birthplace is not known, though his death certificate states he had been born in Brisbane, Queensland and had resided in NSW since 1850. Ther has been no record located of his birth or baptism in either State. James' parents were often on the move between Sydney, Windsor and the Bathurst districts and perhaps this could be the explanation why the registration of his birth has not been found. At 25 years of age, Ann Maria Holland married James Melville at St Matthew's Church of England, Windsor on 20/03/1862, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Henry Stiles. The witnesses were her brother Thomas Holland and Sarah Roberts. At the time of the marriage James' occupation was a bricklayer. The bride and groom both signed the register.

After Ann Maria and James married, James carried on his father's long-distance haulage business between Bathurst and Windsor using 6 and 8 horse teams. James and Ann Maria lived at Windsor in their early years of marriage with 3 children being born there. They then moved over the mountains in 1868 to the Caloola, Long Swamp and Hobbys Yards area. James built a home on 5 acres at Hobbys Yards and they resided there until their deaths...... James died of heart disease aged 71 on 12/10/1912 and was buried at the Church of England Cemetery at Hobbys Yards (Lyndhurst Shire)
