Inventory was made on August 14, 1789 by William McKinley Handy Harris, and Moses Davis.

Will

Last Will & Testament of James Pettigrew } In the name of God amen. I James Pettigrew of the District of Ninety Six South Carolina, being weak in body, but of perfect mind & memory. Thanks be given unto God, calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament; that is to say, principally & first of all, I give & recommend my soul into the hand of my Almighty Redeemer that gave it, and my body I recommend it to earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but at the resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life, I give, demise, & dispose of the same, in the following manner, and form - Imprimis I give & bequeath to Mary my dearly beloved wife & Companion in all my tribulations, for & during her life the one half of the tract of Land on which I now live the dividing line beginning at the Corner North East & running to the South West, with all the improvements thereon; likewise my Negroe man named Jack, & Negroe woman named Phillis, likewise two Horses, & two Cows, to be chosen by her out of my stock, as also all the Sheep, Hogs, & C. I possess - Item I give & bequeath to my daughter Martha Witherspoon, to my son John Pettigrew, to my daughter Mary Verner, & to my daughter Jean Tilley, to each, one Dollar if demanded, likewise to my sons James & George Pettigrew each one Dollar - Item I give & bequeath to my son Ebenezer the one half of the tract of Land on which I now live the part which he now possesses, together with all the Improvements thereon, to be his forever together with whatever I have given him heretofore - Item I give and bequeath to my son William the one half of the tract of Land on which I live. The part upon which I dwell, to be possessed by him peacibly at his Mothers death, & to be his for ever; likewise my Negroe Man Jack, together with all the stock left to my wife her lifetime & other Stock I possess to be, at her death his forever, except one Milch-Cow ?? which I give and bequeath to my daughter Jean Tilley to be put into her possession at her mothers death - Item I Will and bequeath that my Negroe woman named Phillis shall at my wifes death be valued by two judicious men & that one half of her value be paid to my son Ebenezer by my son William & that said Phillis remains with her husband, & be my son Williams forever - and I do hereby revoke & utterly disannul all and every other former Wills or Testaments and do ratify and confirm this to be my Last Will & Testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this the eighteenth day of December one thousand seven hundred & eighty four - Jas.
