"Historical Sketches of Milford, Connecticut", By George Hall Ford:

"A more substantial company of immigrants never followed a clergyman into the wild woods of America than the fathers of Milford under the leadership of Rev. Peter Pruden, who believed the right of suffrage should not be refused to non-church members for that reason only."

The first purchase of land from the Indians was made 12

Feb. 1639, and among those admitted freemen 20 Nov. 1639, were the Prudens and Samuel Coley. In 1640 the settlers voted to call the place Milford.

In 1646 among those assigned house lots and lands, we find James Pruden, Samuel Coley, Thomas Buckingham and Nicholas Camp - whose wife, Sarah Beard, was the first person buried in the plot at the end of the garden of Mr. Peter Pruden.

Records indicate the organization of the church was effected 13 Oct. 1639, when the names of Peter and James Pruden were placed upon the membership roll. Anne (Pruden) Coley joined 14 Feb. 1640, and Samuel Coley's name appears 25 Oct. 1640.

From "History of Genealogy of Families of Old Fairfield", published by Donald Lines Jacobus in 1930, p. 495: James Pruden, who came from England with his brother, the Rev. Peter, was born probably in the vicinity of Kingswalden, Hertfordshire, and was perhaps the same James whose wife "Eiz" (Elizabeth?) was buried there 27 Mar. 1618. (NEB genealogy)
