About James Pugh

James Pugh ~ was a leader in the Regulator movement. He was hanged on 19 June 1771 for his involvement. He was the brother of Herman Husband's first wife.[http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/mckstmerreg.htm]

James Pugh is buried next to his wife Jane Patterson-Pugh. Also buried in the next row is James' father, Thomas Pugh and his mother Elizabeth Pugh. James' sister Elizabeth Pugh-Fruit is buried in the same row, along with her husband, John Fruit and their son John Jr.

Wife:

Jane Patterson-Pugh (1754-1830)

Children:

Jesse E Pugh (1802-1881) Jane "Jenny" Pugh (c.1797-1880)

Note: There is a will on file (Will book 3, page 176) dated 14 Feb 1810, proved in May, court session, 1810, of one James Pugh. It lists his wife as Jane, children; Jenny and Jesse E. Also, names brothers, Thomas Pugh, John Pugh, and sister Penniniah (Pugh) Walker. Executors were Jane Pugh and "trusty friend" Jacob Pugh.

Note: Some family trees indicate that James Pugh son of Thomas Pugh, husband of Jane Patterson was the same James Pugh that was hanged "1771" for his involvement in the Battle of Alamance. This is not correct! The dates prove it! The real James Pugh that was the son of Thomas Pugh and husband of Jane Patterson died in 1810!

Source Notes: 1. Death date 1810. Cemetery records of Randolph Co., NC, from book at Salt Lake City Family History Library, 10 July 2003. 2. According to a reading of the "Old Campbell Cemetery" graveyard done in 1979, for Randolph County Cemetery Records, IV. 3. Also, Randolph County Genealogical Journal, Vol. 4, No. 5, 12-13, 1934.

The Pugh/Fruit/Campbell Cemetery (Old Campbell Cemetery) is a small family cemetery located in the area of Liberty, NC. The cemetery was put on the adjoining corners of the land owned by the Pugh, Fruit, and Campbell families. Today, this land is owned by the Gilmore Plant & Bulb Company. Their address is 9154 Old 421 Road, Julian, North Carolina 27283. Stop in their office and they will direct you to the cemetery. It is located in a wooded section of land, near the back of the farm.

James Pugh married to Jane Patterson. James Pugh is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Pugh.

James Pugh and Jane Patterson are the parents of Jenny born circa 1797 and Jesse Pugh born in 1802. (See Jesse's Headstone it clearly reads born 1802)

The family legend was that the Pughs of Sandy Creek, Randolph County, North Carolina, migrated down the Shenandoah Valley to North Carolina.
