About James A. Scott
James was born in York Co., PA on the west bank of the Susquehanna River, within a mile of the Maryland line. After James was of age his father gave him a farm, but resolving to prepare himself for the ministry, he sold his land to pay his way through college.
James graduated in 1805 and was licensed to preach the gospel October 20, 1807 by the Presbytery of Ohio. He went as far as Sandusky, OH on a missionary tour where he united with others in efforts to establish a mission among the Wyandot Indians.
In 1808 he was called by the congregations at Clinton (now Mt. Vernon), Frederickton, and Martinsburg, in Knox Co., OH, and was soon afterwards ordained and installed in a tent at Clinton as their pastor. He was the first settled minister in central Ohio.
