"Mary Griffin (née Webber) is buried at Braamfontein Cemetery in Johannesburg. She was from Kea, Cornwall. Mary was 33 years old when she married the widower, James Griffin on the 5th November 1863. They moved to South Africa. Mary died on the 17th June 1897 in Johannesburg. Her brother, James was on the Titanic on his way back to his home in San Francisco, to the USA. He was 62 years old and did not survive. In 1914 a Mr J Griffin of Kenwyn Cottage in Port Elizabeth purchased the private rights to Mary's grave and a stone was erected commemorating Mary and James. James' estate was left to Harriet Julian, wife of Edmund Julian".

..................

There doesn't appear to be any conclusive evidence of James' parentage - there are two 1861 Census possibilities for James Webber.

The first Possibilty - is that he was the 15 year old son of Richard Webber (55) a carpenter and Mary (55) both born in Kea. James is described as a Miner which correspondes with his later occupation as given on the Titanica page. There is a 20 year old sister Mary in the household - 10 years younger than the Mary who married James Griffin.

The second Possibility - James son of William Webber born 1806 Farmer and his wife Mary A born1813, who were farming at Little Kilt...? Kea, Cornwall. James (17) born c1844 St. Kea. The reason why this is a candidate is because in 1871 Thomas GRIFFIN was living in Kea, Cornwall aged 15, a servant/work boy in the household of William Webber (67), Farmer and his wife Mary A (58). Thomas Griffin was the child of James Griffin from his first marriage - he subsequently married James Webber's sister Mary.
