In his book, The Printers Devil, Sam Williams, who was a great-grandson of James Williams, states that James and his family left South Carolina in about 1773, moving to what was then western North Carolina, now eastern Tennessee. They settled not far from the site of present day Knoxville. The settlers built temporary log homes and a fort for shelter, and began planting crops. James was killed during an Indian attack while working in his fields:
