Born 10 JUN 1872 in Amersfoort district, Transvaal.
Son of Jurie Johannes KEMP and Maria Aletta GREYLING.
His maternal grandfather, Abraham Carel GREYLING, was a stepson of Piet RETIEF and was killed with him in 1838.
His paternal grandfather, Petrus Johannes KEMP, emigrated from Belgium between 1830 and 1840.
He married Anna Emma BODENSTEIN on 10 JUN 1903. She was the daughter of former landdrost of Krugersdorp, J. C. BODENSTEIN and his wife, M. C. COMBRINK. They had two daughters and one son.
His wife died in MAR 1941.
He died at Piet Retief, Transvaal, on 31 DEC 1946.
The town Jan Kempdorp, Northern Cape is named after him.

Held the Krugersdorp Commando
Took part in the Magato War in 1895 and helped suprress the Jamieson Raid, Battle of Pietershoogte, Battle of Nooitgedacht, Battle of Rooiwal and the Battle of Tweebos. He also took part in the Battle Vlakfontein, Moedwil and Ysterspruit.
Representing the Krugersdorp commando at the peace negotiations at Vereeniging, he urged the continuation of the war and was one of the minority of six who voted against the peace terms.
