About Jan Gabriel Marais

Jan Gabriel Marais (1841-1900), who travelled from Beaufort-West to the Suikerbosrand during the great trek, built the old pioneer house located to the east of the main entrance road. Together with his wife, Cornelia Jacoba Marais, and their eight children, they established a mixed farm at the foot of the magnificent kloof, known today as 'Diepkloof'. The main house was built in 1845 and stands as one of the oldest structure in Gauteng. The farmstead, family cemetery, jonkershuis, waanhuis and skoolhuis were restored in 1989 and proclaimed a National Monument. Today the Diepkloof farm museum is one of the few examples of what Voortrekker, Agterna Trekker life was like early Transvaal Republic. Clearly noticeable are similarities in architectural style and lay out of the Sarel Marais farmstead in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. The Diepkloof Voortrekker farm museum is currently undergoing routine maintenance and restoration and is closed to public access
