About Jan Theuniszen van Tilburg

Jan VanTilburg emigrated to America before 1655. At New Amsterdam, he married Tryntie Pieters, age 23, an orphan who had been sent to New Amsterdam with a group from Amsterdam almhouses by an order dated May 27, 1655. They settled in Bervewyk, Fort Orange. In 1658, Jan was fined 500 guilders and was banished from the fort for three months because he was accused of selling whiskey to the indians. He made payment on the fine, but still lost his house and property at public sale in 1658. They then moved to Harlem, then to Fordham and to New York. Tryntie joined the Dutch Reformed Church in 1674 and Jan joined in 1675. Tryntie died in 1690. Jan married Ariante Thomas November 24, 1691. In 1687, Jan applied to be a soldier taking his oath of allegiance at Kings County New York. Jan married a third time in 1703.
