WILMINGTON, Del. — Jane Averell Hyde Clarke Coulson died Feb. 15, 2004, in Wilmington, Del., after a short illness.
She was born Oct. 23, 1919, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Emily Ryerson Clarke Cooke and George Hyde Clarke of Hyde Hall, Cooperstown.
Jane graduated from Fox Hollow School in 1937 and from Smith College in 1941. She was a member of the American Red Cross Overseas Service from 1943-45.
She married Lt. Commander George Tyler Coulson in Australia in 1944.
She was active in the Colonial Dames in the State of Delaware; a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Christ Church, Cooperstown; and a past member of the Boards of Trustees of LEAF, the Catskill Symphony, and Leatherstocking Theatre. She was also a life member of the M.I. Bassett Hospital Auxiliary and of the Friends of Hyde Hall.
An ardent tennis player and an enthusiastic golfer and skier, she was a member of the Cooperstown Country Club and the Otsego Golf Club.
Jane is survived by her son, Joseph R. Coulson, and his wife, Carrie (Zontine) Coulson; two grandchildren, Sammy and Lucy Coulson; a brother, Arthur R. Clarke of Cooperstown; two sisters, Anne Clarke Logan of Cooperstown and Emily Ryerson Machado of Miami, Fla.; and a half-brother, Thomas Hyde Clarke of Springfield Center.
She was predeceased by three sons.
A memorial service will be held in the spring at St. Mary's Church in Springfield Center.
