Jane OLD - Henry BAILEY

Jane Old, eldest daughter of Richard Old and Jane Liddicoat. Born, in 1816, she was christened at St. Mawgan in Pydar on the 26th December, 1816. Jane died, on the 3rd October, 1852, in New Plymouth, New Zealand. The first born child of Richard and Jane Old, Jane was 27 when her parents and 9 siblings decided to emigrate to New Zealand for a better life. They set sail on the "Essex' arriving in New Plymouth, on the 20th January, 1843. Jane Old had two children out of wedlock, John Old (b.1837), and Mary Jane Old„(b.1840). Father unknown. John Old (d. 1838) and is buried in St Mawgan, Cornwall, and Mary Jane came out with the family on the Essex. Jane married Henry Bailey, on 20th March„1843, in New Plymouth, two months a&er arriving in the new colony. The couple had met on the *Essex' during the voyage coming out to New Zealand. Henry Bailey was born 1818, in Plymouth, England. The couple had 4 sons, Walter b.1844, Henry b.1847, Alfred b.1849, James 1851, and a daughter Hannah b. 1846. Jane, died in childbirth, aged 36 years, delivering of a stillborn male child, atter having injured herself drawing water from the well several days earlier. Jane and child are buried, in the Waitapu Cemetery, situated at the bottom of Bailey Road overlooking the sea, near the New Plymouth Cool Stores.. Mary Jane Old, married John Kivell, and lived on the corner of Lemon & Gover Street in New Plymouth. Alfred William Bailey married his first cousin Amelia Old, the daughter of James and Betsy Old (nee Wills), and had 12 children. Henry Bailey's second wife was Zenobia Knuckey, the widow of Nicholas Knuckey, parents of Mrs John Old, (Mary Jane Knuckey). Henry and Zenobia had a daughter which they named Jane b.1855 who died aged 5 months. Henry Bailey's third wife was the widow, Caroline Simson (nee Julian). Henry Bailey died on the 10th October, 1886, and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, New Plymouth.
