About Jane Sweetnam (Barton)

1820 British Settler

Jane Barton 39, together with her husband Thomas Sweetnam 46, wheelwright, and their 3 children, were members of William Menezes' Party of 51 Settlers on the Weymouth.

Party originated from Kent.

Departed London, 7 January 1820. Arrived Table Bay, Cape Town on 16 April 1820. Final Port - Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth 15 May 1820.

Area Allocated to the Party : Reitfontein then Kareiga River

Children :

  • James Sweetnam 7
  • Hannah Sweetnam 5
  • Ruth Sweetnam 3

Jane died of face cancer. She had a small mole below the eye, and her brass-rimmed spectacles rested on it and eventually caused it to swell. Cousin Hannah thought the old woman from a neighbor's who used to come daily to attend her may have taken, or perhaps Grandmother gave her, whatever was useful in the "Chest"

Thomas was very prosperous in South Africa and took over leadership of the party upon the death of William Menzes.
