Thomas Butler was killed by indians in Cedar Springs, Maryland or Virginia. The story goes that he was in the kitchen when the indians came in the front door. His wife had gone out to the garden, she hid and survived.

Killed by Indians on his farm on Cedar Creek, Shenadoah Co, at the commencement of the Revolutionary War. This was in a letter to Lyman Draper from the son of Col. John Tipton, Jonathan Tipton about 1842-43.*(Grandfather Thomas Bulter)
At his death his wife and son James were taken prisoners by the Indians. His wife escaped the second night, but James was kept 18 mo, when he was released by treaty.
