About Janet Frew

JANET FREW

is provisionally identified here as the daughter of Matthew Frew at Kilwinning, in the Cunningham division of North Ayrshire, and his wife, Agnes Patrick. A baptismal record has not been identified for Janet (unless she can be identified with Jean Frew) and so this cannot be regarded as certain, but this couple did have a daughter named Jean who was born before 2 January 1698 [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTVB-ZLG a daughter named Agnes who was born on 6 January 1695 [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY4H-K4M and a son named Matthew who was born before 17 December 1699 [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTVB-GF4 and two of these names are also noticed in Janet's family. Moreover, Janet and her husband named three of their sons Matthew.

Death

Janet Frew may be identified with: "Mrs Petters spouse to Thomas Petters Mert" who died on or before 20 May 1746 and was buried in Glasgow [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Glasgow Deaths, 1739-57, reference OPR.644/47].

Marriage

Janet Frew married Thomas Peter, merchant, burgess, and guild brother of Glasgow. The request for proclamation of marriage was booked at Glasgow on 30 September 1718 [Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTYB-4T5

Children

Janet Frew and her husband, Thomas Peter, merchant, burgess, and guild brother of Glasgow, had eight children whose names have been identified from Glasgow's old parochial registers.Their names follow:

(1) Thomas Peter [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYSV-3RF He might have been named after his paternal grandfather (There is some uncertainty about the identity of this man at present), but it is possible that he was named after Thomas Peter of Crossbasket and Cardarroch (1639 x 1640-1721), who was his father's employer.

(2) Matthew Peter, primus [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYS2-NTG He and his two younger brothers of the same name seem likely to have been named after their maternal grandfather.

(3) John Peter [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYS2-NYR He is named after his father, and if his eldest son had been named after his employer, then possibly also after his paternal grandfather

(4) Agnes Peter [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM9S-1Y6 She seems likely to have been named after her maternal grandmother.

(5) Matthew Peter, secundus [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Glasgow Baptisms, 1719-28, reference OPR.644/10 He and his younger brother of the same name, as also his older brother of the same name, seem likely to have been named after their maternal grandfather.

(6) Simon Peter [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Glasgow Baptisms, 1719-28, reference OPR.644/10] He may have been named after Simon Baird.

(7) Matthew Peter, tertius [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Glasgow Baptisms, 1728-39, reference OPR.644/11 He seems likely to have been named after his maternal grandfather.

(8) William Peter [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Glasgow Baptisms, 1728-39, reference OPR.644/11]
