About Janet Lang (Semple)

2-24-2013 Comment from Douglas Semple: "Janet had a lovely wee house of her own in Larkhall and only stayed with us (Henry & Martha Semple family) for a short time when she was recovering from an illness. I can barely remember her but from all reports she was a real character."

Robert L. Lang, (relationship unverified but maybe brother) and sister of Janet, Agnes Semple, both signed as witnesses.

Marriage took place December 7, 1906 at Swinhill, Dalserf after banns (meaning period of public proclamation of marriage) according to the Forms of the established Church of Scotland. (It was common practice that the couple were not required to marry in the church, only that the marriage took place before a minister.)

John Lang, age 31, was listed as "Bachelor" and Janet Semple, age 30, as "Spinster" on the Marriage Record. Spinster was considered an older, childless woman that had never been married.

Occupation was listed as "Farmer" for John and "Domestic Servant" for Janet
Residence listed on the marriage record for John was West Machan, Larkhall and for Janet, her residence listed as Swinhill, Dalserf.

Parents listed for John were Archibald Lang, Farmer (deceased), and Ann Lohoar Lang.

2012 Jim Semple, Jr. comment: "This envelope, later laminated, appears (unverified) to be from Janet (Jeanie Stewart Semple) to her son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Jeanie (Jack) Semple, Sr. The envelope is addressed from Janet, 120 Craigbank St, Strutherhill, Larkhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland"
2013: Information changed & updated based on information from Douglas Semple

2-23-2013 Comment from Douglas (Dougie) Semple, second cousin once removed of Jim Semple, Jr.: "I believe this letter was, in fact, sent from Janet Lang (Semple) (Great Aunt Jen) who resided with us at Craigbank St. for a short time in the 50's. The house was built in the late 40's."

Detrimental to further information is that the stamp has been torn off.

A copy of both sides of the envelope is shown under photos.

The contents of the envelope are unknown.

April 2014 photo (Courtesy of relative, Douglas "Dougie" Haddon Semple) of Beech Cottage in Swinhill, home place of Henry Barr Semple & Jeanie 'Janet' (Stewart) Semple clan (married in 1870), with children William, Jane, Janet, John, Henry Sr, Marion, Thomas, Agnes and Isabella. On the 1891 Scotland Census record for Henry Semple Household, Janet is the first one born at Dalserf in 1876 where Swinhill is located. The 1901 Scotland Census record list their residence next door to Beech Cottage at Birk View house.

April 2014 comment from Douglas "Dougie" Haddon Semple to Jim Semple, Jr., "Well, this is where it all began for us; this is Beech Cottage in Swinhill. As far as I know, it was still occupied by a Semple up to about 40 yrs ago. I think we can safely assume that the upstairs windows are a recent addition and the rest of the windows and doors are modern. One of the brothers, William, inherited it and lived there the rest of his life (as far as I'm aware). Again, as far as I know, all of the family were born there including your great Grandfather (Henry Semple, Sr)."
