Japhet Mason a house carpenter living on what is now called Old Fort Road New London hearing the alarm took his gun from its hooks and entered Fort Trumbull as a volunteer From there he crossed the river to Fort Griswold with his brother in law Stephen Hempstead near whom he was standing at the time of the killing of Ledyard and saw it as described Seeing there was no quarter to be expected he fled and escaped He afterward moved to Stephentown New York State where he died March 4 1787 after which his family returned to New London
