About Jehiel Hawley

The Hawley Record, compiled and published by Elias Sill Hawley, 1890 Genealogical Note #20, page 452 Jehiel Hawley, son of Samuel, Sen, born in 1685, was a hatter by trade, and settled in Durham, CT, where he remained probably only a few years. He married Hope Stowe, of Middletown, CT, daughter of Ichabod, in 1708, and seems to have remained in Middletown until his decease in 1727. Administration was granted to the widow, Hope Hawley, on the estate of her late husband, Jehiel Hawley, Sept 5, 1727, and the inventory was exhibited to the Court by her, May 7, 1728; and so on April 13, 1730, she was empowered to take the guardianship of her children: Hope aged ten years; Samuel, seven; and Hannah, four.

The following peculiar memoranda are found on the Records of Middletown, CT, concerning the widow Hope (Stowe) Hawley: Middletown, Conn, Town Votes - Fol. 2, p. 151: April 1, 1728 "At the same meeting the town axcepted or Granted to the widow hope Hawley, Liberty to Let her dwelling hous that part of it which stands on the highway, to stand so Long as the same hous stands, provided she pay as an acknowledgement one Indian corn pr year every year to the town clerk as the sd hous stands." "Memorandum of the payment of one Indian Corn per year, by the Widow Hope Hawley as obliged by her Grant Entered in the 151 page of this book. 1729 through 1734 Rec'd pr Joseph Rockwell, T Clerk 1735 Rec'd pr Jabez Hamlin, T Clerk 1736 through 1748 Rec'd pr William rockwell, T Clerk "the Widow Says the house is fell down."
