About Jenny Terry
She was a slave, and the mother of the St. Leger Carter's children. She was 12 and he was 53 when the relationship began. He was an avid poet and wrote a poem entitled "Heart". It was about his love for Jane a girl who did not return his advances. The story goes that he would come to breakfast with the children and give them their lessons. He taught them to read and write, as well as making sure they had a trade which would serve them once they were free.
When she moved to reading after his death she took the name Jane. It is proposed that the Clark and Tebbs children who appear on the 1860 census of Reading were also his.
