JOHANN HEINRICH. *Meiszen.Germamny in 1764, son of the physician Johann Georg R. and Eleonora Bolmar. From 1777-80 his father instructed him in the “Chirurgy and barbierkunst”, from 1782-84 he studied medicine under the “Collegium Medico-Chirurgicum " at Meiszen. After passing his examination, he practised for a year at Meiszen and Groszenhayn and then went to the Cape, where he arrived 1786 as so. In 1794 he was appointed for a time of three years surgeon in the Hospital. In 1804 he was appointed First Surgeon of the second class of the auxiliary troops, having given “genoegzame blyken zyner bekwaamheid en geschiktheid”. In 1805 he was, at his request, released from his duties on condition that he must put himself again at the disposal of the Government in case of an attack by the enemy or in any other urgent need. In 1812 he had a shop in Cape Town (B.S. 5/2), in the same year he bought a house at Swellendam and in 1813 he got a licence to open a retail shop there. R. was married to (X) Bernhardina Wilhelmina Oppel (15.3.1795), d. of B. W. Oppel (q.v.); (XX) Catharina Elisabeth Rothmann, d. of S. Rothmann (q.v.).
