Johann Jacob GREYVENSTEIN

He was born 20 March 1726 at Klein Umstadt, Hesse, Germany.

He was the son of Johannes Nicolaus Greifenstein and Anna Helena Vogel.

He arrived at the Cape 1759 on the ship Kronenburg at the Cape as a soldier of V.O.C. He became a mason and received burger rights in 1762.

He married on 30 July 1769 Cape Town to Sophia van de Kaap, an emancipated slave who called herself Sophia KLUYSMAN. In 1793 he and his wife were reprimanded for their bad mode of life.

He left the following children: Geertruyda Barbara Kluysman (illeg. d. of Sophia of the C.), Johannes Jacobus, Helena Catharina, Johanna Antonia, Abigail Aletta, Barbara Christina. (Rq. 1762: 173; Bdlr. 20: 17; GMR 1760-62; Inv. O.C. 20: 48.) In 1791 G. was granted a monthly allowance of 6 rds. by the Cape Church Council, in 1793 he and his wife were reprimanded on account of their bad mode of life (slegte levensaard).
