JOHANN THIEL ROCKENFELLER and Anna began their marriage on beautiful and fertile land about 30 miles east from the Rhine River. Together with some neighbors, they departed to America. This move was motivated through correspondence received from friends who'd settled in Germantown, Columbia County, New York in the group of some 3,000 Palatines who immigrated in 1710. The Sharpe family ancestors were a part of that 1710 group.

The strong head winds of the Atlantic Ocean caused their small ship to take several months to arrive at New York Harbor. They moved up the Hudson to East Camp, where their friends lived (later to be known as Germantown, Columbia County, New York). Deill leased some land, which he later purchased and erected a house, a saw-mill and maintained a store, all by 1751. His work ethic enabled him to prosper to the extent that, at his death, he owned about one tenth of the 6,000 acre town.
