About Johannes Jean? Becker

Born in the town of Schweinsberg in Hesse, Germany, Johannes Becker left Europe from Rotterdam on May 30, 1752 aboard a ship named "Sally" (similar to the one shown here). He was about 23 years old at the time and with him were his father (Heinrich), mother (Anna Dorothea), wife (Catherina), and baby boy (Jacob). The ship arrived in Halifax, NS in September after a long, stormy trip during which many passengers died, including his father.

In 1753, he helped found the town of Lunenburg, NS where he lived and farmed for the remainder of his life. Lunenburg was the first attempt at a British settlement outside of Halifax in what had previously been Acadian territory. German protestants like Johannes were chosen to colonize the area because of their loyalty to the British crown and they eventually adopted Anglicized names (in this case, Becker became Baker).

In 1796, he purchased the southwest half of Big Tancook Island and divided it among his five sons (Jacob, Henry, Frederick, Christian and Andrew) and his son-in-law John Cross. He died in August 1812 and is buried in the Bayview Cemetery in Mahone Bay.
