Johannes Eliasen was the third oldest child of 6 born to Elias Ingebrigtsen and Elen Andersdaughter. He is the 6th oldest known direct-line member of the Ness Family Tree.
He was raised on the Kirkevik farm and later married twice.
With his first wife, Gunhild Eriksdaughter, he had 5 children (3 boys and two girls). These were: Elias Johannesen; Hans Johannesen; Elen Johannesdaughter, Jabok in Johannesen and Olava Johannesdaughter. Elias died at the age of 12 weeks; Elen, born in 1788, died in 1810 at the age of 19 years; Jakob died at age of 17 years. No info on Olava. Hans, born in 1790, married Marta Malene Klavensdaughter in 1828 and settled in "Rosholmen and then "Hillesot". It is unknown when Johannes' first wife died but it was prior to 1796 when he married his second wife.
In 1786, he leased a part of his father's Kirkevik farm (8 mk), where he had been born and raised. But, a year later, in 1787, Christopher Christenson (a.k.a. Kristopher Kristensen), the first known recorded settler at a farm called, "Aspenes", turned over 18 mk of the farm to Johnannes. Turns out - this Kristopher was the father-in-law of Lars Ingebrigten who was Johannes' uncle (his father's brother). At the time this 8 mk of land on the Aspenes farm was given to Johnannes, the entire farm consisted of 24 mk. Johannes then moved his family to the Aspenes farm. This family was probably his first wife, Gunhild and their kids.
With his second wife, Alette Madsdaughter, he had 12 more children (6 boys and 6 girls) and they too were born and raised on the Aspenes farm.
With Johannnes now living on the Aspenes farm and with the death of Johnannes' father, Elias, in 1800, the Kirkevik family farm left the hands of the Ness direct-line as it was taken over by one of Johannes' brothers, Ole Eliassen, and one of Johannes' first cousins, Kristen Kristensen (son of his father's brother, Kristen Ingebrigtsen). These men both now owned a full half of the Kirkevik farm.
Aspenes farm was probably first setttled about 1730 A.D. It lies on a headland (nes) running into Nordfjord, a branch of the Malangenfjord. The land rises from a fjord up to a grove of asp (osp) trees. The name "Aspenes" is a combination of asp + nes. The inner boundry was the stream/river running through the woods. The outer boundry was the river from the mountains.
Aspenes was first mentioned in financial records (skyldlagt) in 1749. The first settler on the farm was Kristopher Kristensen (see above for family marriage connection). As Johannes Eliassen was given 18 mk of Aspenes farm by Kristopher Kristensen in 1787, Johnannes is the first family relative at Aspenes farm.
Kristopher Kristensen died in 1788 and the remaining 6 mk of Aspenes farm property was retained by his widow until 1789 when she left the farm. Her part of the farm then remained unoccupied until 1793 when both Johannes and a man named Ole Monsen both owned a full half of the entire 24 mk farm (12 mk each). In 1800, Ole Monson left the farm and his part was taken by Ingebrigt Larsen (who was probably Johannes' first cousin and the son of Lars Ingebrigt (Johannes's uncle and his father's brother). In 1810, this cousin was listed as so poor, he couldn't pay his taxes. And, by 1816, Johannes owned the entire Aspenes farm. Johnannes died on May 12, 1833 but his widow, Alette, didn't die until 1852.
Aspenes was kept by the family for about 50 more years, until 1900, when Johannes' grandson and Anna Olsen's father), Bertel Mattis Berteussen died. After his death, his widow, Alette Johanna Olsdaughter, and her children still remaining in Norway, left and emigrated to America. She sold the farm to Ole Eriksen Rodvel (not a relative). He and his wife, True Olsdaughter, had 5 children. Two of the 5 children never married and stayed on at the Aspenes farm with their parents (sons Ole and Nils). The father died in 1936. His wife died in 1949. Son Ole died in 1968 and, in 1970, Nils was still alive and living on the Aspenes farm.
