-------------------- Stamvader! Trou in Nederland met Margaretha Klaasdogter Coen(ie) (Coerie). Hy arriveer voor 1692 sonder haar en die kinders. Margaretha en haar 3 seuns arriveer 1692 en woon in Stellenbosch. -------------------- Johannes was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Swart family in South Africa. He arrived in the Cape in 1685 as a sick comforter ("sieketrooster") in service of the VOC. In 1692 he received permission to have his wife and 3 sons brought to the Cape from Amsterdam. After vowing the pledge of allegiance on 16 Jan 1694 he started service as secretary of the local magistrate office in Stellenbosch - a post he held until 27 Aug 1701 - where he was responsible for compiling documents such as wills, codicils, contracts and procurements. From 1697 to 1701 he succeeded Sybrand Mankadan as sick comforter and teacher in Stellenbosch. The church fathers weren't happy with him and asked in 1700 for a "stichtelijker" man to replace him. The house in Stellenbosch where Jan and Margaretha lived in can be found today as the last house on the lefthand side where Andringa Street and Dorp Street end. In Mar 1697 he bought the small farm "Vallei Luctry" from Jean Margra (a Huguenot from Lausanne) and started a transport business.
