About Johannes Vingboons
Joannes, a cartographer and watercolourist, was the first to paint views of New Amsterdam and draw the first maps of New Netherland. Joannes did all that whilst never leaving Amsterdam (Holland). He based his works on the primitive drawings of the explorers and settlers of New Netherland. He published his work through the publishing house Blaeu, where he was an employee. His brothers Philips and Justus were leading architects in Amsterdam, and they built some of the homes in central Amsterdam that can still be seen today.
