John Albiston was an early Mormon convert in England. His second wifeand children James (#1), John Jr. (#6), Hannah (#7), Lucy (#8), Joseph(#9), Mary Ann (#11) and Nancy (#12) were also baptized Mormons, however,not all continued practicing that faith. Before converting toMormonism, it is appears that John Albiston and his wife Hannah Thackerattended Methodist services and had some of their children christened atthe Tiviot Dale Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Heaton Norris, Lancashire,England.

Mormon missionaries began their proselytizing at Preston,Lancashire in 1836 or 1837 and soon there were some some 500 converts.""The importance of England as a field from which to draw emigrants to thenew settlement ... at Nauvoo [Illinois], and in 1840 ... Brigham Young,Heber C. Kimball, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, John Taylor, WilfordWoodruff and George A. Smith, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, weresent to cultivate that field. There they ordained Willard Richards anApostle, preached and labored for over a year, established aprinting-office which turned out a vast amount of Mormon literature,including their Bible and "Doctrine and Covenants," and began thepublication of the Millennial Star."
