About John "Jack" Arledge

From the research files of Pam Wilson:

It seems that John "Jack" had two separate families--

(1) a first family of mainly sons (wife's name unknown), as reflected in the 1820 census:

HOH in 1810 Edgefield Co, SC census (along with John (Sr) and Isaac:

1810 SC/Edgefield Co:

031 ARLDREDGE, John, Jr. (10100-00100-00) John born 1784-1794 and wife (same age range) with one son born 1800-1810.

1820 Edgefield Co, SC census: 089 ALREDGE, John (310010-10010) John and wife born 1775-1794; one daughter and 3 sons born 1810-1820; one son born 1804-1810

Daughter is Sara, and sons were MARTIN (b 1808-12), JONATHAN (bc 1811), WILLIAM (b. 1814) and MOSES D. (b. 27 Aug 1820). Perhaps the first wife died in childbirth when Moses was born or soon thereafter.

His first wife's name is unknown. I have speculated, based upon the prevalence of the names Eliza and Martin in subsequent generations, that her name MAY have been Eliza Martin. Records for Martin families in the Edgefield County area should be searched.

(2) Then on 18 Aug 1822, Jack remarried Drady Owens in Edgefield District, SC and started another family. Records show that MARY (b 1825) was born in SC, while ELIZABETH ("BETSY") was born in AL in 1832, so the family must have gone to Wilcox Co, AL. around 1830.

1830 census: Aldridge, John Unknown Townships, Wilcox, AL 1830: 0-0-2 (10-15)-2 (15-20)-0-1 (30-40)//2-1-0-0-1 (20-30) neighbors: Bailey, McIntosh [this is John "Jack" Arledge of Edgefield Co, SC, son of John and Anna; his second wife Drady Owens, and his children from first marriage plus one new daughter]

By the 1830s, his older sons were grown: Martin married in 1835 in Monroe Co, AL, Jonathan in 1836 in Monroe Co, AL, William married Mary Bowman in 1843 in Wilcox Co, AL. (We don't have marriage records yet for Moses and Elizabeth Prewett, though Moses states in a military affidavit that they were married in Milam County, TX in 1848).

There are a lot of land records in AL for this family in the 1830s. The Arledge land records are for two families--(1) this one, with John, Martin and Jonathan, and (2) that of his brother Isaac D. Arledge and his sons Isaac and John H, The following are for John and sons Martin and Jonathan:

ALDRIDGE, JONATHAN 05/15/1837 24518 AL1610__.185 (Jonathan Aldridge of Wilcox

County, Alabama) (Section 28, Township 11-N, Range 9-E, 39.905 acres)

ARLEDGE, JONATHAN 05/20/1837 26769 AL1650__.405 (Jonathan Arledge of Wilcox

County, Alabama) (Section 2, Township 10-N, Range 8-E, 41.395 acres)

ALDRIDGE, JOHN 08/01/1837 25471 AL1630__.120 (John Aldridge of Wilcox County,

Alabama) (Section 28, Township 11-N, Range 9-E, 79.81 acres)

ARLEDGE, JOHN 07/28/1838 29604 AL1780__.056 (John Arledge of Wilcox County,

Alabama) (Section 28, Township 11-N, Range 9-E, 79.81 acres)

ARLEDGE, MARTIN 11/01/1858 47057 AL2020__.358 (Martin Arledge of Wilcox

County, Alabama) (Section 28, Township 11-N, Range 9-E, 79.81 acres)

1840 census:

By 1850 census, Jack (56 Farmer $750, b. SC), Drada (40 b SC) and their youngest son JOHN FRANKLIN (10 b. AL [b 1839]) had moved moved to Neshoba Co, MS, where daughters Mary (and husband William Smith) and Betsy (and husband Rev. Greenberry McNeil) also settled. They are living next door to Paschal Martin, age 36, b. SC--could he be a relative of John's first wife?

1850 Slave Schedule, John Arledge, Neshoba Co, MS:

45 Male Black

40 Female Black

26 Male Black

20 Male Black

15 Female Black

12 Female Black

John "Jack" apparently died (where? probably in Neshoba Co, MS--see below) around 1859-60. In the 1860 census, Drady is living in the household of daughter Mary Smith. Howver, John's will is proved in Wilcox Co, AL

I recently found the evidence that links the Wilcox Co, AL children (family #1) to the Neshoba Co, MS children (family #2) in records regarding the settlement of John's estate, and names Martin (who must

have been the oldest son) as administrator:

Evidence that Martin was son of John Arledge, and apparently was the administrator of his estate: Wilcox Co, AL Land records, from Jack Buckelew <jackelew@aol.com>: Aug 22 1860--Drady Aldridge, William W

Smith and wife Mary Smith of Neshoba County Mississippi trying to collect "their share" of the estate of "John Aldridge, late, deceased in Neshoba County Mississippi." "Estate now in hands of Martin Aldridge or his attorney of Wilcox Co AL". Book O page 54. (I did not determine if the "estate" was in Mississippi or Wilcox Al)

Is this the JOHN ARLEDGE who acquired land (41 acres) through the Cahaba Land Office in Alabama on 1 October 1835? Two weeks later (15 Oct 1835), an ISAAC ARLEDGE (his brother?) acquired land there as well. In 1837, land patents were issued to JONATHAN, MOSES, ISAAC, MOSES, ISAAC, ISAAC, and JOHN ARLEDGE for various acreages (39-79 acres). There is another patent to JOHN ARLEDGE in July 1838 for 79.81 acres.

Is this the John ALDRIDGE listed in the 1840 census in Wilcox Co, AL?

In October 1840, land patents were issued to JOHN and ISAAC ARLEDGE for 80.125 and 78.44 acres respectively.

These are all the land patents issued to ARLEDGE through the Cahaba Land Office of Alabama. All indicate a St. Stephen's Base Line.

In Nov 1858, MARTIN ARLEDGE received a patent through the Greenville Land Office (also St. Stephen's base line) for 79.81 acres.

Elsewhere in Alabama, land patents were issued to ELI ARLEDGE (October 1851 and January 1859) through the Lebanon and Centre Land Offices (Huntsville base line) for 39.93 and 39.97 acres respectively; to TILMON ARLEDGE in May 1837 through the Demopolis Land Office (St. Stephens base line) for 40 acres; to JOHN ARLEDGE in May 1850 through the Huntsville Land Office (Huntsville base line) for 40.15 acres; and to SAMUEL ARLEDGE through the Montgomery Land Office (St. Stephen's base line) in December 1889 for 80.2 acres.
