About John A. Ashby

John, his wife Martha and daughter George Anna/Georgianna in transcription of 1860 Stafford County, VA census:

John died between 1870 - 1882 in probably Prince William Co., Virginia.

John's father is often noted as Benjamin Franklin Ashby, but proof of such is unclear from the records. His father could have been Benjamin, William or Thomas. In 1870, he lived in Rock Hill, Stafford, Virginia, two doors from a 56-year-old William Ashby. Twenty years earlier, the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Stafford Co, Virginia (Page: Eastern District, roll M432_978, p21B, image 45, #352), however, notes a then 16-year-old John living in the household of Thomas Ashby, along with a then 36-year-old William and others, so perhaps Thomas was the father and William an uncle. Benjamin has already passed away in 1843.

George Robert Ashby, who was also a member of the same household in 1850, is buried in Cedars Run Cemetery, Prince William Co., VA and it is considered a strong possibility that he and John were brothers.

Next research steps should be to locate the parents/grandparents of Thomas, William and Benjamin.
