About John Boone, Jr., Major

Sex: M

Birth: 16 DEC 1632 in Charleston, South Carolina

Note: Major John Boone came to South Carolina's shores with the first group of English settlers, known as the

"First Fleet." As a Lord Proprietor's deputy, a member of the Grand Council and of the vestry of Christ Church,
Major Boone, as well as his brother, Joseph, was heavily engaged in colonial politics. For many years the Boone's

privileges the colonists so passionately desired. John Boone married Elizabeth Patey, daughter of Edward Patey,

who was the son of Theophilus Patey, and Elizabeth Gibbes, who was the daughter of Thomas Gibbes. Elizabeth had
a brother, Edward, and a sister, Martha, who was the wife of Joseph Tattnall. John Boone's daughter, Sarah,

the parents of two of South Carolina's most noted sons: Edward Rutledge, a signer of the Declaration of

Independence, and John Rutledge, first governor and only President of South Carolina. When Sarah Boone

passed away in 1743 she was buried beneath her pew at Christ Church. Another Boone grave is located in the
