About John Brown Reading

John Brown Reading was the first born son in a Jewelry making family in Birmingham UK that dates back to at least his grandfather Samuel Reading who had a shop on Edmund Street in the late eighteenth century. His father John Reading Sr. had a shop on Spencer Street that was passed to John Brown’s younger brother Walter after John Brown immigrated to New Zealand. This business became known as N.C. Reading and Co. and examples of their work can been found in the British Museum. John Brown Reading married Elizabeth Jane Phillips on October 12th 1835 in Shropshire. On October 5th 1839 with wife, son George and daughter Ellen, John Brown Reading left the UK aboard The Duke of Roxburgh , the third ship to arrive in New Zealand at Port Nicholson on the 8th of February 1840, John was 27. John brought the first wedding rings out to the colony and was the first jeweler in the area continuing to make wedding rings and other jewelry. He supplied some of his works to Shaw and Son after they opened in Lambton Quay. John Brown Reading and others discovered a small amount of gold in the Karori hillside in 1857. John Brown worked in Wellington for a few years before moving out to Karori and settling on a farm. He was also appointed postmaster for Karori. He and George Hunter (1st mayor of Wellington) became friends on the Roxburgh and they formed a musical society upon arrival. He represented Wellington Country in the Provincial Council (1856-57) and Karori and Makara (1865-69). John Brown and his wife Elizabeth had a total of eight children • George Frederick Reading born Nov. 2nd 1836 Birmingham, England • Ellen Reading born Nov. 13th 1838 Birmingham, England • Alfred John Reading born Sept. 20th 1841 Wellington, New Zealand • Edward Reading Aug. 22nd 1844 Wellington, New Zealand • Ann Elizabeth Reading Oct. 27th 1846 Wellington, New Zealand • Louisa Catherine Reading May 4th 1849 Wellington, New Zealand • Sarah Jane Reading June 2nd 1852 Wellington, New Zealand • Walter Joseph Reading July 27th 1855 Wellington, New Zealand
