About John Clutter

According to Beer's history of Washington County, Pennsylvania, page 519, the family came from Ireland, and this John was the original immigrant. He came first to New Jersey and then to Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1788 where he settled on a farm of 600 acres one mile north of Lindley's mills where he lived until his death in 1828.

John is found in the 1790 census, living in Washington County, Pennsylvania with 3 males under 16, 2 males over 16, and 6 females.

CLUTTER Samuel 1795 John/Ruth Wade

He is found in the 1800 census now in Morris Township on page 815 with 1 male of 10 to 16, 2 males over 45, 1 female 10-16, 2 females 10-16 and 1 fe male over 45.

In the 1810 census on page 95, still Morris Township, there is 1 male 16 to 26, 1 male over 45, 2 females 16 to 26, and 1 female over 45. In 1820 on page 257, there is 1 male over 45, 1 female 10 to 16, and 1 female over 45.

In 1830 on page 114, there is 1 male 70 to 80, and 1 female 15 to 20 who is probably Experience, a granddaughter who was paid by the estate to take care of John. On 15 April 1795, John Clutter is deeded land on Ten Mile Creek by David Dille and wife Elizabeth. David Dille had obtained a patent for 146 acres which was recorded 4 July 1807. John Clutter and wife deeded 122 acres to William Clutter for $533. John Clutter and wife Ruth also deeded to William Clutter part of the same tract for which John Clutter Sr., Levi Lindly and Samuel Ruttan obtained the patent. This was recorded 14 Oct 1841 .

In 1783 both John Clutter Sr. and John Clutter Jr. are names on the tax lists of Washington County.

John's will was probated in 1835 in Washington County. A wife was not named, but he may have been married for a third time since there is other mention of a wife.

Other sources state that he was born in Ireland and died on 4 July 1839 in Greene County, PA. That date doesn't work with the date of the will being probated.
