About John Cragin, Sr.,

John Cragin was the first relative to come to America as a Scottish Prisoner of War. He came on the John & Sarah in 1652 and settled in Woburn,Middlesex,MA. Severala generatons lived here and some moved to New Ipswich,NH and on to ME in different areas.

John (i) Cragin was born in the South of Scotland, about 1634. When sixteen years of age he was pressed into the service of King Charles and was captured by the forces of Cromwell at the battle of Dunbar, September 5, 1650. He was sent in 1652 to New England as a prisoner of war with 270 others on the ship, "John and Sarah," and tradition says that he was attacked with smallpox on shipboard and would have been thrown into the sea but for the earnest entreaties of an English woman, Sarah Dawes, whom he afterward married.
