John was the son of Virginia "Jinnie" Cummings. His half-brother, James Cummings, is buried at Saint Annah Freewill Baptist in Pembroke, NC.
He married Bertha Oxendine on Dec. 21, 1899 in Smiths, NC. After Bertha's death, he married Emma Bullard, daughter of Elias Bullard, on Feb. 18, 1910 in Pembroke, NC. After Emma's death, he married Swannie Locklear Edwards on Apr. 16, 1921 in Pembroke, NC.
The following was taken from the Oct. 30, 1941 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:
John N. Cummings, 72, one of the most prominent Indians of this section, died last night at a Lumberton hospital after an illness of several weeks. He had been at the hospital for 10 days.
Funeral arrangements had not been completed today, but it was understood that burial would be some time tommorrow at Harper's Ferry.
