John Cutler, Immigrant, Arrived 1637 on Rose of Yarmouth, Setttled Hingham, MA

Husband of Mary. Died soon after arriving in Hingham, in 1637/38. His wife was left with six or seven small children and re-married Thomas Hewett of Hingham, whose wife died in 1640. "It is presumed that the children were taken by Robert Cutler of Charlestown, Massachusetts, who must have been a relative."

John Cutler came from Sprowston, now Sprauston, two miles from north of Norwich, and about eight miles south of Hingham, in the County of Norfolk, England. His name first appears among the persecuted adherents of Rev. Robert Peck, A. M., of Hingham, who "sold their possessions for half their value, and named the place of their settlement after their natal town." He embarked, it is believed, in the Rose of Yarmouth, William Andrews, Jr., Master, which sailed on or about April 18, 1637. He was at Hingham by or a little after June 10th following, when land was assigned him. He came attended by his wife Mary, seven children, and one servant. He died the following year, apparently in February 1638, which must have subjected his widow and children to great hardships.

"John Cutler ...was according to Rev. Abner Morse, originally of Sprowston, now Sprauston, two miles north of Norwich, and eight miles south of Hingham, in England. It is in Norfolk county. Mrs. Morse's authority was Daniel Cushman's manuscript records of settlers in Norfolk county. John Cutler was related to the other pioneers of the name apparently, but the English line has not been traced to the knowledge of the writer. John Cutler embarked on the ship "Rose of Yarmouth," William Andrews, Jr., master, which sailed April 18, 1637, and he immediately settled with his neighbors from England in Hingham, Massachusetts. Land was assigned to him, June 10, 1637. He then had with him his wife Mary and seven children, and one servant. His home lot of five acres was south of the town street. He had also two planting lots of six or seven acres, bounded on one side by the World's End, and twenty acres on the plain for "a great Lot." He had other grants as well. But he died in 1637-38, leaving his widow and seven small children in straits. It is presumed that the children were taken by Robert Cutler, of Charlestown, Massachusetts, who must have been a relative.

The widow married (second), Thomas Hewett, of Hingman, whose first wife died May 22, 1640. Hewett died May 24, 1670.

"This Family Branch comes from an old English family primarily from the Suffolk Co. area where the name was common and prominent. John Cutler was born in 1600 in Sprowston (now Sprauston), Norfolk Co., (adjoins Suffolk Co.) England and is the progenitor of this American Cutler Family. He arrived in Boston, MA on 8 Jun 1637 on the Rose of Yarmouth. He was accompanied by his wife, seven children and a servant, and settled in Hingham, MA with his beloved minister, Rev. Robert Peck, A.M, and fellow Puritans. He died in Feb 1638 before he had much time to make his mark in America.

Much is known about the suceeding generations, as Mrs. Bonnie (Cutler) Bogenrief, a well-known Cutler genealogist has researched the Family for decades, and published several volumes of Family History. She is descended from John Cutler's son Samuel, while we are descended from his son Thomas. We pick up our branch with William Caleb Cutler, a branch which has had little, or no prior research. He was born on 22 Jan 1852 in Canton, IL, in a pioneering family which was very successful in farming and stock raising, first in Fulton Co., then in Hancock Co., IL. He later moved to Centerville, IA to raise his family as a master mechanic with the Burlington, then eventually on to Lusk, WY, where he became a well-known rancher in the area. Most of our documentation centers around his son, and my grandfather, William "Alden" Cutler, a Spanish-American War Veteran, a lawyer, City Attorney, States Attorney and County Judge in Jerauld County, SD for 50 years. All together we have thirteen generations of this American Cutler Family documented.
