About John Thornton Down
British Victoria Cross War Medal Recipient. He served as a Ensign in The 57th Regiment, Middlesex Regiment. He was awarded his medal for service at Poutoko, New Zealand, on October 2, 1863.
John Thornton Down died of typhoid fever at Otahuhu Camp Auckland, New Zealand in 1866 and never returned home to England. He is buried in the Otahuhu (Holy Trinity) cemetery
