About John Barker Dunn

John Barker Dunn was born 2 Apr 1833 at Ypsilanti Michigan the seventh child of James and Sally Barker Dunn. In 1841 his parents moved to La Harpe Illinois. In 1846 John's brother Thomas volunteered to fight in the war with Mexico. Another brother Crandall was called on a five year mission to England. The Dunn family then packed and prepared to join the first company to Utah.

The James Dunn family and William Wello Maguire family came to Utah with the Captain Crandall Dunn Company, arriving in Salt Lake City, 2 Oct 1852. On 11 Feb 1853, John Barker Dunn and Juley Ann Maguire, daughter of William and Charlotte Ann (Babb), were married at North Ogden, Utah. Juley Ann Maguire was born 31 Jan 1836 in Georgetown Pennsylvania.

On April 10, 1864, John & Juley along with Miranda Campbell with her two sons David & Warren started from Providence Utah with one wagon and two yoke of oxen each and a few stock cattle. They traveled by way of Gentile Valley and Soda Springs and crossed Bear Rive on John Cozzen's ferry boat near the mouth of the outlet. The families settled in Bloomington Idaho on April 18, 1864. John Dunn and William Campbell built the first home there of native logs. By the end of the summer forty families had built one room houses and spent the first winter there.

The Dunn family moved to Bennington in 1868 and a little later moved to Three Mile where they spent the rest of their lives. A canyon east of Three Mile is named Dunn Canyon. John died at his home 24 June 1919 and was buried in the Bennington Cemetery. Juley died 3 Aug 1920 and was also buried in the Bennington Cemetery.
