About John Gedney, of Salem

JOHN GEDNEY was born about 1603 in England and died August 5, 1688 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. He married 1) SARAH BARTHOLOMEW. She was born about 1612 in England and died about 1637 either on the voyage over from England or shortly after landing in Salem. He married 2) MARY PRINCE, widow of JAMES PRINCE; 3) CATHERINE CLARKE after 1647, widow of WILLIAM PRINCE.

John, Sarah and their first three children immigrated to America, May 11, 1637, on the ship "Rose of Yarmouth" out of Norwich, England. John was listed as a weaver in the shipping list but he was ordered to keep an inn at Salem on November 10, 1639 and is always described in the Salem records as a "vintner."
