About John Gorton

John lived and died on a part of his father’s estate, which he inherited, located on the western edge of Gorton’s Pond, named in his honor. He was a mariner, and it is probable that his long absences account for the few references to him. In 1668 he purchased land including an orchard and buildings, and in 1677 was one of 48 people to receive from the colony a grant of 500 acres of land in East Greenwich for services in King Philip’s war.
