About Johann Heinrich Deppe

Emigrated from Bremen, Germany to Philadelphia, PA, USA on May 29,1849.

Became a US citizen on January 2, 1854.

Biography From The House of Deppe:

"He was commonly known by his middle name, Henry. Apparently his father was an officer in the Prussian Army and hoped his son follow in his footsteps. His mother apparently did not want her son going into the military service, and possibly also because her daughter had recently passed away at the age of 16, she secretly financed and assisted Johan Heinrich to emigrate to America. He landed in Philadelphia, PA on 29th May 1848, and worked his way inland, following the canal adjacent to the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers. He settled in Monroe County, and found employment in his trade (Milwright) with George Christman, and soon became his leading Foreman. He remained on this job for several years and then purchased a farm at Pine Run (about a half mile north of where Pine Run Creek emptied into Pohocono Creek (commonly known as Big Creek - it is now the source of the man made Beltsville Lake)). Some time afterwards (In the early 1860s) he built a powder mill. He subsequently sold the powder mill and built a slate factory (made slates for school cyphering). He then became a Builder and Contractor, building flour mills, saw mills, paint mills, tanneries, blast furnaces, and cement mills; he built the first cement mill in the Lehigh Valley, between Cemeton and Copley; he built Blast Furnace No. 2 at Parryville for the Thomas Iron Company.
