Sir Ellis Hicks was knighted Sep 19, 1356 at the Batle of
Poictious by the Black Prince. From him lineally descended John
Hicks of Totsworth in Gloustershire who dying in the 7th year
of King Henry VII (prob 1492) left 2 sons and a daughter,
Thomas, Robert, and ....... . (Another account implies that
HICKES of Silton Hall. Manor of Nunnington (14th century) ,
North Riding, Yorkshire was the elder branch of the HICKES
family, and that it was a branch of this family moved to
Gloucestershire early in the 16th century ).

It is traced to England, and i n the early days was spelled Hix. The first of the family is known of was Jo hn Hicks, who had two sons, Thomas and Robert. Grandchild or great grandchild of Sir Ellis Hicks. Scot t Washington, Illinois, Feb. 2, 1938 Our emigrant ancestor was Sir Robert Hicks spelled Hix until 1 800 who came to Plymouth Colony, Mass. from Bermandsey Sourthwark London in 1 621, in the ship Fortune , which brough the second party of pil grims and landed at New Plymouth, Nov. 11, 1621. He was the son of James Hicks of London and his wife Phebe who is supposed to h ave been a daughter of Rev. Ephraim Allyne of Hartfodshire. Jame s was the son of Baptist Hicks, born about 1526 and his wife Nan cy, daughter of James Everhard. Baptist was the son of Thomas Hi x of Tortworth Gloucestershire which he inherited from his fathe r John Hix and on which he resided until his death, mar. Joan Da rney. This Thomas was the eldest son of John Hix who was lineall y descended from Sir Ellis Hix who was knighted by Edward the Bl ack Prince at the battle of Portress Sept. 19, 1356, for bravery in capturing a set of colors from the French. Sir Robert Hicks I, the emigrant, was born about 1575 and marrie d Margaret Morgan in England in 1596. He had four children Eliz abeth, Thomas, John II, and Stephen. Margaret Morgan died about 1607. In 1610, Sir Robert I married in London a second time, Mar garet Winslow, by whome he had four more children Samuel, Ephai n, Lydia, and Phebe. While his second family was still young, Si r Robert Hix I emigrated to Plymouth Colony. Samuel was ten year s old. His wife and her children folllowed in the ship Ann , wh ich arrived at Plymouth June 22. This family subsequently settle d in the adjoining town of Drixbury, Mass. Sir Robert Hix I live d a substantial citizen of the Purtitan Colony for 26 years. He died in Plymouth on March 24, 1647. His will and that of his wif e are both recorded. John Hicks II was the second son of Sir Robert Hicks by his firs t wife. He was born in London about 1606 and emigrated to Americ a in 1635. He had married Harodais Long with whom he lived about 3 years in Wymouth, Mass. then moved to New Port, R.I. and by w hom he had Thomas Hicks, Hannah, and Elizabeth. At New Port he h ad Disagreements with his wife and the authorities parted them . John II went to Stanford, taking much of her estate and thence in 1642 to Hemstead. This John Hicks, the Virginia Register say s, was the ancestor of all the Hickses of Maryland and Virginia. John Hix II, having divorced his first wife, married Rachel, wi dow of Josiah Starr, by whom he had no children. He died May 167 2 leaving one son. Thomas Hix III had twelve children. He was born 1640, probably i n Wymouth, Mass., but came to Long Island and there married Mary Washburn by whom he had Thomas the IV and Jacob. She died in 16 77. Thomas Hix III married Mary Doughty by whom he had ten child ren Isaac, William , Stephan, John, Charles, Ben, Phebe, Charit y, Mary, and Elizabeth. In 1666, Thomas Hicks III obtained of Go v. Nicolls a patent for about 1400 acres of land near Little Nec k where he had a good home for many years. Thomas III lived out his one hundred yrs. and died in 1740.
