About John Hildreth

The surname Hildreth is dervied from the given name Hildred. Jon Andrew Hildreth believes the Hildreth family are descendants of Hildredus de Karleolio (of Carlisle), a baron who held lands in Cumberland, England, and was mentioned as serving King Henry II in the Great Roll of the Exchequer for 1131.

Historians have speculated that Hildredus married a granddaughter of Waltheof, Earl of Northumberland. Waltheof married to Judith of Lens, William the Conqueror's niece. Waltheof was executed by William for supporting a revolt by Edgar the Aetheling, grandson of Edward the Confessor former of King of England. The connection is speculative.
