  • SIR JOHN DE HODELSTON, Lord d'Anys, was summoned to a council at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and ordered, on the 26th September, in the 26th of EDWARD I. to attend the king at Carlisle with horse and arms, in the record of which he is styled a baron (see Appendix to the Peerage Report). He was also one of the great council, who subscribed in 1301, the celebrated letter In Pope Boniface VIII. declaring "that their king was not to answer in judgment, for any rights of the crown of England, before any tribunal under heaven, &c. and that by the help of God they would resolutely, and with all their force, maintain against all

  • men." To this important document were affixed the hands and seals of arms of 104 of the earls and barons, amongst whom JOHN DE HODLESTON was the 89th. Sir John assisted at the celebrated siege of Karlaverock, anno 1300, in the train of the Earl of Lincoln. He m. temp. HENRY III. JOAN, daughter and sole heiress of ADAM DE BOIVIL, Lord of Millan,* in Cumberland, and had four sons. RICHARD, his heir, Adam, John, and Robert. Sir John Hodelston claimed free chase between the waters of Eske and Dudene, also lnfangenthef in Millum, Seton, Booth, Kirkstanton.f &c. He was s. by his eldest son,

Lord of Millum, who had permission to hold a market on every Wednesday at his manor of Bothill, in the county of Cumberland, and for a fair to be holden in the same place four days in the evening, and on the day of the exaltation of the Holy Cross, and the two days following ; witnessed by William Talbot, steward of the King's Palace at Westminster, 24th October, 21st EDWARD III. Sir John Hodleston was one of the collectors of the tenth and fifteenth granted by the laity of Cumberland to the king, and he obtained, according to Lysons, license in 1335 to embattle his mansion at Millum.
