About John Hunt, II

One site makes this John the son of a different son of Ralph, Samuel (& Mary Burroughs). However based on the following authoritative sounding opinion I am going with John, not Samuel, as the father:

from :

It should finally be laid to rest by the direct documentary evidence found through the WILLs (two of them) of John's brother Samuel Hunt of Hopewell NJ which identify the John Hunt who married Margaret Moor(e) as the son of John Hunt of LI and grandson of the pioneer Ralph Hunt.

His will is dated 1741 but proved 1748. Not sure which one to take for his death date. Were wills "proven" 7 years after death?? Many sites have 1748 for death date.

His will (from :

1740-1, Feb 11. Hunt, John, of Hopewell, Hunterdon Co.; will of. Eldest son, Wilson, a negro slave "Peet," and an account due testator from Daniel Coxe.

Second son, Jonathan, plantation.

Wife, Margaret, negro wench Dinah. Two daughters, Johannah and Charity.

Sons, John and Noah, plantation where Richard Hudnut lived, adjoining George Smith.

Executors -- wife, and sons Willson and Jonathan.

Witnesses -- William Cornell, Gershom Moore and Rueben Armitage. Proved Oct. 1, 1748 Lib. 6, p. 82 1748, Oct 1. Inventory (£434.5.4) includes Bible, 28 cheeses (£2.6.8), negro wench Dinah (£60), two guns, 12 hives of bees, negro man Peet, (£30).

John Hunt (John5, Ralph4, Thomas3, Richard2, Thomas1) was born 1693 in Newton, Elmhurst, Long Island, NY, and died 11 Feb 1740/41 in Hopewell, Hunterdon Co, NJ. He md Margaret Moore 8 Feb 1713/14 in Newton, Long Island, NY. She was born 1695 in Hopewell, Mercer, NJ, and died 1752 in Hopewell, Mercer, NJ.

At least one site says he married Sarah Ely in 1710, which might push his birth year back to the 1690 estimated by other sites.

There is interesting info on this line, later years especially, in A History of the Old Presbyterian Congregation of "The People of Maidenhead.

It is said that he owned a stone house, and that in 1778 Washington and his generals planned the battle of Monmouth there, and for that reason it is called the Hunt house, and the "house of decision". (It is now a private residence.)
