John Joseph Murphy fought as an American soldier in the Philipine-American War and served as the paymaster to Col. Lyman Kennon. He married an Ilocana lass and settled in Baguio City, Philippines. He became the owner of the Alhambra Theater along Session Road and operated a fleet of "Yellow Taxi Company" cabs. He made his fortune in mining, real estate, transportation and other ventures.
