About John Ledyard
John and his wife were cousins. Both families disapproved of the relationship, but John and Abigail slipped away secretly. Despite the efforts of Abigail's father to intercept them, they were married in a civil ceremony.
Like his brother, Youngs, John went to sea as a youth, eventually pursuing a profitable trade between New London and the ports of the Caribbean in partnership with his brother. He died at sea, apparently of fever, within weeks of the death of his brother.
